[India], August 14, 2026: On the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, Millets.News – Millets International Media Portal has announced a global initiative proposing that August 30 be observed annually as World Millets Day. The first proposed global observance will take place on August 30, 2026, with an open invitation to every individual and institution connected with the millet ecosystem. The initiative calls upon governments, international organizations, agricultural and research institutions, universities, Farmer Producer Organizations, millet farmers, manufacturers, exporters, startups, chefs, nutrition professionals, hospitals, schools, civil-society organizations, media platforms and consumers to come together every year for millet education, awareness, collaboration and action.

The proposal for World Millets Day builds upon India’s historic leadership in taking millets to the international stage. Following a proposal submitted by the Government of India and supported by 72 countries, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. The initiative focused global attention on the nutritional value, agricultural resilience, cultural importance and economic potential of millets. While the International Year generated significant international engagement, an international year concludes after twelve months. The challenges that made the International Year necessary – hunger, unaffordable healthy diets, climate uncertainty, weak farmer markets, limited processing infrastructure and insufficient public awareness – continue year after year. World Millets Day is therefore proposed as an enduring annual platform that can carry forward its spirit and achievements.

Why the World Needs a Dedicated Millets Day

The world continues to face serious food and nutrition challenges, while agriculture is being affected by water scarcity, declining soil quality, extreme temperatures and unpredictable rainfall. Millets cannot solve these challenges alone, and they should not be promoted as a miracle cure. They can, however, make an important contribution as part of diversified diets, resilient farming systems and inclusive rural economies.

A dedicated annual day can help maintain millet awareness beyond temporary campaigns and events, bring fragmented stakeholders onto one international platform, strengthen evidence-based public understanding of millet nutrition, and focus attention on farmers, Indigenous food traditions and rural livelihoods. It can also encourage research, seed development, mechanization, processing and product innovation, improve market access, value addition, trade and fair returns for producers, and inspire younger generations to learn about millet farming, food and entrepreneurship.

The Global Millet Opportunity

Despite their history and importance, millets remain underrepresented in global food markets. FAO reports that annual global millet consumption averages around 30 million tonnes, with more than 85 percent of consumption occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, while millets account for less than 3 percent of global grain trade. These figures reveal an important global paradox: millets support traditional diets and dryland communities across major regions, yet their visibility, investment, processing capacity and participation in international trade remain comparatively limited.

World Millets Day seeks to bring public and policy attention to this gap and encourage the international community to view millets not merely as traditional or “forgotten” grains, but as strategically important crops for dietary diversity, sustainable farming, climate adaptation, entrepreneurship and rural development.

India’s Responsibility and Global Leadership

Announcing the initiative on India’s Independence Day carries special significance. India led the international effort that resulted in the United Nations declaring the International Year of Millets 2023 and is also the world’s largest millet producer. Indian millet exports reached approximately 138,690 metric tonnes, valued at about US$61.57 million, during 2025–26, demonstrating the growing potential for millet farming, processing, value addition, branded foods and international trade.

“India gave the world a powerful message by leading the International Year of Millets. Our next responsibility is to ensure that the movement does not end with one calendar year,” said Mr. Prasanna Srinivas Sarakadam, Founder of Millets.News – Millets International Media Portal. He added that August 30 is proposed as a common annual platform where farmers, scientists, governments, institutions, entrepreneurs, health professionals, chefs, students and consumers can educate, collaborate, innovate and act.

Why August 30?

August 30 is being proposed as a stable annual date around which the worldwide millet community can organize coordinated programmes and public-awareness activities. The initiative is intended to complement, not replace, existing state, national, cultural or institutional millet festivals and awareness days. It will be inclusive of all millet species, regional food traditions and stakeholder groups and will not belong to any single organization, business, country or commercial interest.

Beginning August 30, 2026, Millets.News invites stakeholders to organize farmer field programmes, seed-diversity exhibitions, nutrition-awareness sessions, millet meals, scientific conferences, university seminars, policy dialogues, startup and processing showcases, school and college activities, media interviews, documentaries and public-awareness campaigns. Organizations are encouraged to involve farmers directly and ensure that World Millets Day creates practical benefits throughout the value chain rather than remaining only a ceremonial occasion.

A Global Invitation

Millets.News – Millets International Media Portal will submit formal communications to governments, embassies, international organizations, agricultural and research bodies, universities, farmer organizations, industry associations and other millet stakeholders. The communications will invite institutions to support the proposal, organize annual millet-awareness and educational activities, promote farmer-centred research, policy, processing and market development, and share millet initiatives, innovations and success stories with the international community.

“World Millets Day must become more than a slogan or a one-day celebration,” Mr. Sarakadam added. “It should become an annual accountability point at which the global millet community reviews what has been achieved for farmers, nutrition, research, sustainability, enterprise and public awareness – and what still needs to be done.”

Through the proposed World Millets Day, Millets.News seeks to create one common occasion every year when the world can recognize millet farmers, share scientific knowledge, celebrate culinary traditions, encourage responsible consumption, promote innovation and renew its commitment to resilient and inclusive food systems. August 30 is proposed as a day for knowledge, farmers, nutrition, innovation and sustainability—a day to connect the world through millets.
